I just realized, if I had gone to Hofsta or to Ithaca I wouldn't be able to go home tomorrow. Add that to the list of reasons why I love being at FSU.

| Oh, how things have changed. |
[11 Sep 2007|04:55pm] |
It's been ages since my last real post, and things have changed so much since then. I suppose ages isn't really the best term; it's only been a few months. But I feel like it was years ago.
In the past months, I've worked at a real job, reconnected with old friends, left other friends, found a cause, met my hero, started school, and begun the new phase my life.
Let's start at the beginning. After I got back from the family trip, I spent maybe two weeks wasting my life sitting on the couch watching TV. On August 3rd I started the training for Blooming Place for Kids, a camp for abused and neglected children. I found out about it through Chris and Haley, who have been doing it for years. At first I was only going to do it because I really needed a job and money; however, once I got there I knew there was so much more. At training I had a good time getting to know my fellow counselors and the camp, and it seemed like an easy job. We read the case files for the kids; most had histories of abuse, some sexual, some physical, but none of the files went into much detail. I truly had no idea what to expect.
What I got was more than I ever expected. the first week was kids from 8 to 11, and the next two were 12-15. These kids were some of the most amazing people I've ever met in my life. They have gone through so much pain, hurt, and disappointment, but they still have the strength to push on and be better people. Sure, some have behavior problems, but can you blame them? As long as you got their respect they listened. There are a few that stick out in my mind. Mollee, at the beginning, was uninterested and didn't care about anything at all. She had no energy and tended to fall asleep; she never wanted to participate and threw tantrums. We soon found out that the medication she was on was a blood pressure reducer, and this was probably causing her attitude. Jan called her therapist and got permission to lower the dose (Jan evetually stopped giving it to her altogether). Almost immediately, we saw the change in Mollee. She began to participate and enjoy herself. She no longer sulked all day, and her eyes were finally open to the world. I couldn't believe my eyes; she was acting like a child again! It was wonderful. The last I heard, Mollee was to be permanently taken off that medication.
Another that stuck out in my mind was a little girl called Camille. This girl was one of the sweetest people I've ever met in my entire life. She had the best attitude about everything and was always willing to participate and try something new. When we needed help with someone, we would ask Camille because everyone liked her. She was always smiling and singing. By the end of the camp we couldn't get her to STOP singing. I was truly sad when she left; luckily, I saw her again the next week when she came to drop off her foster sister for senior camp.
The last two that really stick out in my mind are a brother and sister, Juan and Juanita. Juan is 12, Juanita is 13. Juanita was in my group, and at first I thought there was no way I could like her. She was bossy, loud, and had that "oh no you didn't" kind of attitude. But as time went on, I realized she was actually a wonderful, strong girl. She worked very hard to set a good example for her brother and loved him very much. She felt a lot of guilt because she thought it was her fault that they were taken away. By the end of camp, Juanita was one of my favorites. Her brother, Juan, was different, but I loved him too. He was smart, charming, and really wonderful. All the girls loved him, and he loved them too. Even more, he and Juanita, even at their age, had founded a charity to help homeless children. Juan was the president of this society- he's 12 years old! These two were absolutely amazing.
Then, of course, there was Jan. Jan Horne is the founder of BPFK and the leader; she is the most amazing person I've ever met. She has the biggest heart ever. You know how in The Grinch, how his heart grows 3 sizes? Jan's heart is 5 times bigger than the Grinch's big heart. She is kind, caring, and also just a fun lady. In December she had a heartattack and was STILL able to raise all the money for camp and be the highest energy person there. She cares so much about the kids who come, and cares about the counselors too. She always made sure we were doing alright, and if we needed a break (it could get very stressful) she would take over. I adore Jan Horne and everything she does. She doesn't even think of it as anything big; she was nominated for "Everyday Hero" and said she didn't deserve it, that the soldiers in Iraq were the real heroes. I never wanted to upset Jan or do anything that she wouldn't like, because she's my hero.
Not to be forgotten is Chris Fletcher. I've known Chris since 6th grade, and working with him this summer has given me more respect for him than I ever thought I could have. He was the camp director and it was his responisiblity to make sure everything went smoothly. He did his job wonderfully, and was still able to make it fun for us and the kids. I can't even imagine how much work he must have done, but he didn't complain once. He dealt with the kids really well too, much better than I could have. It was also wonderful just hanging out with him. He's a really smart guy, and quite funny. I'm really glad he was there, because he helped me a lot and always made me feel like I was doing a good job (which I needed sometimes). Plus, we hadn't hung out in forever, so it was great getting to re-connect.
Blooming Place seriously changed my life. I'll write about the rest of the summer til now later.

So I got back from family trip/orientation 2 days ago. The trip was pretty good. I had a great time in St. Louis; we went shopping, saw Shakespeare in the park, rode bikes, and just sorta hung out. Golden was better than it has been before, probably because we weren't there for too long. We went to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Rescue, where they mostly have big cats like lions and tigers, and we took a horse trail on the last day. Oh, and we watched a butt load of the Discovery Channel. Little Rock was nice, but short. Grandee cooked us a lamb dinner, we went shopping for my graduation present, and watched the Wallace and Grommit movie (which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it).
After we left Grandee's, it was a long ass drive to Tallahassee. But it was so worth it, because orientation was actually fun. I know, right? No one enjoys their orientation. Unless you go to FSU and are one of Hamilton's Hungry Hippos! My group was great. I made a few friends, 3 of whom are in the same sort of field as I am for majors. I saw my dorm, and while it's not the greatest, it's got air conditioning, so it could be worse. I had lunch with Holly, who is doing summer. I also found out that the Athletic Training major is one of the most competative to get into at the school; only 25 students a year get in. Kinda scary. I've signed up for classes, too, which makes me an official student. I'm taking Family Relationships, Science of Nutrition (both required for the major), Intro to Statistics, Intro to Theatre, and First Year Experience, some freshman get-to-know-your-school class. It's only 1 credit, but whatever. I'm taking 14 credits in total.
In conclusion, orientation was great and I can't wait to get back up there.

The wedding was amazing. My family is so great.
Highlights of the night: - John swaying as we waited for Nanny to walk up - My drunk grandfather rambling as we took him home - Freaking out because my cousin Reese (who already looks like me) has the same haircut as me - That's what she said - Playing "got your nose" with the cutest kid I've ever seen in my life - Excluding his little sister, who matches him in cute-ness - Being challenged to a karate match by Reese - Anything Juliana said - Some dude saying I was hot. To my brother.
All in all, a great night.

I kinda sorta pig out on them. But they're only available like once a year, so I've gotta take advantage of it while I can. |
| Literary: | Dan Brown books | Maybe I should say "book", since they're pretty much the same. But they're page turners, and sometimes you just need some good old fashioned crap. | | Audiovisual: | Van Helsing | It's a horrible movie, but it's so much fun! Plus, pretty Hugh jackman. :D |
| Musical: | Justin Timberlake. | I can't help it, it's just so catchy! |
| Celebrity: | Madonna | So she's sorta a crazy, but I love her. She's so clever. |

What is wrong with me today? I nearly started crying in Bio, and just now I actually DID cry while watching the Dr. Who finale on DVD. Granted, it was sad, but generally I don't do that.

| I don't give a damn about my reputation |
[09 Jan 2007|09:11pm] |
Today was fun. In history we didn't do hardly anything, and what we did do was quite interesting. The russian revolution is an incredibly fascinating period of time. Plus, we got to talk about Rasputin and how freaking hard it was to kill that B. Since it was club day, we were sitting in there for a while and I made my hands sore rubbing Sean's shoulders.
JA was fine, except the kid that did the soda run today was horrible. He got us CANS. Wtf, mate? Cans are unacceptable, and anyone who's ever done a soda run knows this. But nooo, this kid is a dumbass. Plus, he didn't get me my Cheetos. It ended up ok, because I went down during the break time to get me some food. But annoying kid will never be used for soda runs again.
I almost died during JA too. I was typing up the notes for this chapter, and I accidentally hit the power cord and turned off the computer, without saving the notes. I was seriously about to cry. All was not lost, though; the program had one of those retreive functions and it was still there. But man, I was panicking.
Moving on. English was fine, except Fletcher had no delicious rocket candy. Ass. That's his job, to provide rocket candy! Shame on him for not having it. Anyway, besides that it was fine. I really like The Sound and the Fury.
Spanish was great, because we didn't have class. Since it was club picture day and there were NHS and SHS pictures during that block, Rizzo was just like whatev, we'll have class next time. So that was baller.
Soccer was fun. Mostly because we did what we always do, sit on the bench and talk shit. But now we have Taylor there to make fun of and corrupt, which is always entertaining. What was not entertaining, however, was when Nick decided to sit on me. I can't even remember what he did it for. Kip joined in too and put his legs over my head. THAT was a scary place, let me tell you. I eventually got out of the situation by biting Nick's hand. Damn, that kid is heavy.
